Chapter 2 Learning and teaching practices in KinderWorld International School As a fast progressing country, many Vietnamese people are able to find jobs with high incomes. Together with strong economic development, society pays much more attention to education now than before. Parents want to find good schools to nurture the future of their children and they have entrusted the schools in educating their children 2.1. Learning practice The KinderWorld Group is a new innovative model for learning and teaching in Vietnam. It is offering a combination of Eastern values with an International outlook on education. Singapore International School (SIS) is the typical school model of the KinderWorld Group. Students of SIS have the choice to choose either the Integrated program or the International program.     • The International programme has been developed based on the core subjects of the Singapore and the Australian curiculum.     • The integrated programme combines the best in International education and retaining the core subjects required by the Vietnamese MOET.   Vietnamese students will be taught together with International students by qualified expatriate teachers in some key learning areas of the International program. The Students will also have the chance to join all outdoor activities in an English speaking, multi-cultural environment. The main subjects, the school also emphasizes on music, art and physical education to allow the students to develop all round and to help them to discover and develop their individual intelligence. The school provides also the complete academic pathway for students in Vietnam to complete their education from kindergarten to university, complying to Vietnam International rulings.A typical KinderWorld Group of International Schools consist of classrooms of an optimal size of 25 students, libraries, multi-media rooms, art and crafts rooms, music rooms, science laboratories, multi-purpose halls. Facilities include a swimming pool, mini football pitch and yard for other physical activities. Walking around the grounds it's easy to see the difference from a regular Vietnamese school which traditionally place much more of an emphasis on academic exercises and tend to ignore the physical development of kids.Small motivational words such as ‘Honesty’, ‘Commitment’ and ‘Industrious’ are stuck on the board in front of every classroom. Each one is the name of the class as students from each class bear that particular virtue, it helps students graduate from school, these virtues will be their life-long belongings. The using technology to assist in teaching and learning, in which all students are taught there, from young to use hi-tech tools such as computers, printers, projectors, visualisers and smart-boards. Working with brand-established technology names such as Acer, company want to offer the best in both hardware and software to enhance teaching. The schools help students to enjoy learning by making meaningful connections through group work and multi-media assignments, supplemented with experiential learning for a highly dynamic and multi-cultural world of tomorrow. 2.1.1 Pre-School Programme International Kindergarten : Classes are kept small with an expatriate teacher leading the class with the assistance of a local teacher. This ensures an optimal environment in which young minds learn and develop. Local Kindergarten : Led by qualified local teachers and conducted in English. English lessons are conducted by expatriate teachers. KinderWorld provides preschool education for children from 18 months to below 6 years. The curriculum is designed to develop children’s social skills as well as providing a strong foundation in English language and Mathematics skills. The curriculum also covers Science, Social Studies and promotes the development of fine and gross motor skills. The Kindergarten programme is a play-based inquiry learning programme. Class Levels · Pre-Nursery - 18 months up to 2 years old · Nursery - 2 years old up to 3 years old · Kindergarten 1 - 3 years old up to 4 years old (full day only) · Kindergarten 2 - 4 years old up to 5 years old (full day only) 2. 1.2 Primary Programme Singapore International School (SIS) and UniWorld International School link to various schools in Singapore and Australia, it provides students with an international primary and secondary curriculum drawn from both the Singapore and Australian curriculums. The KinderWorld Group of Schools are the only International Schools to offer Chinese as a Foreign Language. Integrated Primary and Junior High School Programme combines Vietnam's education, retaining the core subjects namely Vietnamese, Maths, Science and Moral & Humanity. Vietnamese students, depending on their specific education level, will be taught by qualified expatriate teachers in a range of key learning areas of the International curriculum - English, Arts & Craft, Social Studies, Physical & Health Education, Information Communication Technology and Chinese as a Foreign Language. The above will be complemented by subjects, such as English as a Second Language (ESL) Singapore International Primary School Examination (iPSLE): Students can use the results of the iPSLE to seek admission to secondary schools in Singapore or for gaining entry into a higher school of learning in other English speaking countries. As above, the curriculum bases on criteria set out by the Ministry of Education, Singapore and the Eight Key Learning Areas of the Australian curriculum and then modified for our international student community. The International Programme incorporates the GAC Certificate in the final year of study which distributes access to over 100 Universities worldwide. Its qualified academic staff originate from various English native-speaking and Asian countries. They specialize in conducting creative student-centered lessons keeping to the high standards of an International education. The GAC is developed by ACT Education Solutions, Limited (AES), which equips students with the skills and knowledge to gain entry into university programme in one of the 100 well known universities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, the United States of America as well as various other overseas locations. The programme is accredited through the New South Wales Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB), Australia. The company have also aggressively moved on to forge academic alliances with prestigious leading institutions in Australia, United Kingdom and America for Professional Training in Early Childhood.. Pegasus Education Centre has set up an employment network that will provide job placement services for KinderWorld’s graduates upon successful completion of their training. It has linked up with various childcare centers and kindergartens in Singapore, as well as overseas. In addition, its graduates are also given opportunities to work overseas in its international kindergartens and schools if they are keen to take up the challenge of working overseas.. Collaboration with Yayasan Mendaki Yayasan Mendaki is a self-help group dedicated to the empowerment of the disadvantaged of the Malay/Muslim community through excellence in education. Yayasan Mendaki was established 25 years ago by Malay/Muslim community leaders in partnership with the Singapore Government. In 2003, Pegasus Education Centre was appointed by Yayasan Mendaki to upgrade members of the Malay/Muslim community by training them in our Early Childhood Courses under the Surrogate Employer Scheme (SES). The iPSLE is an international version of the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) taken by Singaporean students after six years of education in a Primary school (usually at the age of 12). The KinderWorld Examination Centre has created opportunities for Vietnamese students to sit for the iPSLE and use the results of the examinations to seek admission to secondary schools in Singapore. Senior High School and University Foundations Programme is conducted Year 10 and Year 11 programmes, in collaboration with John Paul College (JPC) Queensland, Australia, for Vietnamese students in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. 2.2.2 Global Assessment Certificate In January 2008 KinderWorld signed an Agreement with ACT Education Solution Limited to conduct the Global Assessment Certificate (GAC) and testing programmes in Vietnam to provide students there have more oppotunities The GAC is a University Preparation Programme that provides students with the academic knowledge, skills and confidence to successfully complete the Bachelor Degree at one of many selected pathway universities. Students can directly apply for entrance and credit to over 100 universities in the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand and Mexico, as well as RMIT Vietnam. In addition students are able to sit for the GAC, the leading college entrance examination in the United States of America. 2.2.3 Vocational and Technical Training KinderWorld Kindergarten & Private School Joint Stock Company entered an Agreement with TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute to provide Vocational and Technical Programmes in Vietnam in the areas of Automotive, Business and Commerce, Accounting, Hospitality and Tourism and other related programmes in October 2007 In addition, in early 2008 it signed an Agreement with City and Guilds (C & G) in the United Kingdom to offer their Vocational programmes in Vietnam. C & G are the largest vocational trainer in the United Kingdom and train over 2 million students per year world wide. The IGCSE is provided by the University of Cambridge International Examination and is recognized by universities and employers worldwide as evidence of their ability and a mark of quality. 2.2.5 Pegasus University College To meet the ongoing needs of International Vocational Education in Vietnam, KKPS has applied for a license to offer even more International qualifications in Vietnam. 2.2.6 Proposed Pegasus International University As part of its global plan to provide alternative higher education pathways to the Vietnamese, plans are underway for the application of an International University license in Vietnam KKPS are setting up a series of Education Metropolises in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang and Hue City, to provide facilities for study as well as accommodation for students. It will be collaborating with University partners from Australia, the United Kingdom and Singapore to participate in the programme delivery of this new International University. Recently KKPS signed an MOU with Swinburne University of Technology in Australia to further develop this initiative. There will be five schools of discipline: Information Technolog Commerce and Business Management Tourism and Hospitality Management Teachers' Education and Training. English Language KKPS is in negotiations with various other University partners from various countries. KKPS has successfully secured various land parcels in the different cities, with support from the various Government authorities for the construction of this exciting Education Metropolis concept. Overseas Studies Consultancy Service For students who wish to pursue their Education in Australia, the KinderWorld Group of schools has formed partner school relationships with top schools in Queensland, Australia which would accept students from its schools with recommendations. Alternatively, students may choose to decide on schools of their own choice in Australia. For students who wish to pursue their education in a country nearer to their homeland, in Singapore, the KinderWorld Group of schools has formed partner school relationships with top schools in Singapore which would accept students from our schools with recommendations.
