I/ Class Description:
45 students - Grade 10 – Vung Cao Viet Bac high school, Thai Nguyen.
Level: Pre-intermediate – Intermediate
II/ Time: 45 minutes (one period)
II/ Objectives:
+ Aim: Students can write a profile .
+ General knowledge: Students learn how to write a profile based on prompts provided.
- Language: The simple past of verbs and the connectors often used in a profile.
- New words: Words related to music
+ Skills: Writing a profile.
III/ Anticipated problems
+ Ss may not have sufficient vocabulary to write about the topic and be familiar with this text type, so T should be ready to assist them.
+ Time lasts longer than expected .
IV/ Teaching aids:
+ Textbook, chalk, blackboard, pictures, handouts...
V/ Procedure:
Organization
Greeting the class and checking students’ attention.
Check the old lesson (5 minutes)
T calls on 1 students to check the old lesson.
T ask Ss to sumarize the main content of Listening lesson in 5 short sentences.
T gives feedback and correction. And then gives marks to Ss.
“Lan Huong interviewed Quang Hung in “ My favourite Musician” programme. Quang Hung said that Van Cao is his favourite musician. Whenever he hear the song Tien Quan Ca he feel great and feel proud of his country. He thinks Van Cao’s music is very sweet and gentle, and very lyrical.”

Task 1: Completing the sentences
Instruction: You are required to make up complete sentences about Scott Joplin using the prompts provided.
Before Ss do the task, T gives a picture and some information about Scott Joplin: “Scott Joplin was born in 1886 and he was famous American musician. He died in 1917”
T asks one St to read aloud example.
Then T shows some notes in example:
Ex: Scott Joplin was born in Texas in 1886, into a poor but musical black family.
Note: Tense of verb, article, prepositions in each sentence.
T divides the whole class into groups of table.
T leaves 2 minutes for Ss to do.
T goes around helping Ss if necessary.
T calls on 6 members of different groups to read their answers.
T gives remarks and correct answers: 1. He learnt to play music when he was very young. 2. Scott learnt to play the works of composers like back, Beethoven and Mozart as well as to compose music. 3. He quickly became famous. 4. His tunes were wonderful mixture of classical European and African beats which were known as Ragtime. 5. All in all, he wrote 50 piano rags and was called the King of Ragtime. 6. He died in 1917.

Then T focuses Ss on some points about writing a profile by asking some questions:

+ To write a profile of a person who died, we use the past simple tense.

+ use prepositions, conjunctions when necessary.
For example: on, it, at, and, but…
Task 2 : Profile writing
Instruction: You are going to write the life story of Van Cao, using the prompts provided.
T gives some suggestions to Ss:

Family : Poor workers
Start composing music: when very young →start/be First song : 1939 , quickly famous →write/ become Tien Quan Ca (National Anthem ) : 1944 → write

Before Ss doing the task T explain some suggestion of handout.
Asks Ss to work in groups of table and make sentences with available prompts. T reminds Ss to use the right tense of verbs, articles, prepositions, and conjunctions…when necessary.
T give handout
After 5 minutes T calls 6 Ss to go to the board and each of them will write down a sentence.
T checks the sentences and gives feedback.
Answers:

2. He started to compose music when he was very young.
3. His first song was written in 1939 and he quickly became famous.
4. He wrote Tien Quan ca (our National Anthem) in 1944.

Van Cao was a famous musician in Vietnam. He was born in Nam Dinh on November 15th, 1923, into a poor worker’s family. He started to compose music when he was very young. He wrote his first song in 1939, and quickly became famous. In 1944 he wrote Tien Quan Ca – our National Anthem. Van Cao not only wrote songs and poems, but also drew paintings. He died on July 10th, 1995. He was known as a very talented musician and highly appreciated by the Vietnamese people.
T summarizes the main points of the lesson. + Information in a profile: name, date/ place of birth, family, profession, major achievements, date/ place of death. + Using the past simple tense, prepositions, articles.
