I. Phrases of Reason (Cụm từ chỉ lí do) Cụm từ chỉ lí do thường bắt đầu bằng từ nối BECAUSE OF: Cấu trúc: Clause + because of N/ N phrase/ Gerund Phrase. Hoặc: Because of N/ N phrase/ Gerund Phrase, clause. Chú ý: Because of có thể được thay thế bởi due to Ví dụ: · The students arrived late because of the traffic jam. (because of + Noun) · He walked slowly because of his bad leg. (because of + Noun phrase) · Because of his wife being there, I said nothing about it. (because of Gerund phrase) II. Clauses of Reason (Mệnh đề chỉ lí do) Mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ lí do là một mệnh đề phụ chỉ lí do hoặc nguyên nhân của hành động được nêu trong mệnh đề chính. Mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ lí do thường được nối với mệnh đề chính nhờ các từ nối: BECAUSE, SINCE, AS. Cấu trúc: Because/ since/ as + clause, main clause. Hoặc: Main clause because/ since/ as + clause. Ví dụ: · As you were out, I left a message. · Since he missed the first bus, he came ten minutes late. · I did it because he told me to. Khi đổi mệnh đề sang cụm từ, nếu 2 chủ ngữ giống nhau, ta có thể dùng: “Gerund phrase” Ví dụ: She stayed at home because she was sick. à She stayed at home because of being sick. She has just got good marks. 4. It got dark. I couldn’t read the letter. 5. He came to the office 10 minutes. He missed the first bus. Exercise 3. Change clauses of reason to phrases of reason: 1. Mary didn’t go to school yesterday because she was sick. 2. I can’t sleep because the weather is hot. 3. He left school because his life was hard. 4. The train was late because the fog was thick. 5. We stopped our car because the traffic lights turned red.
