UNIT 2: SCHOOL TALKS Period 7 A: Reading I. Objective: * Aims:By the end of the lesson, student will be able to understand small talks of students, teachers, parents about themselves, their daily lives or teaching and learning in school. II. Language focus 1. Grammar: using gerund and to – infinitive appropriately 2. Vocabulary: words related to school 3. Skill: Skim the text for specific information III. Teaching aids: powerpoint IV: Teaching procedure: Time Teacher’s activities Students’ activities 7 min 1. Warm-up: a, Ask students to guess the meaning of “school talks”: + means the dialogues at school, conversation, discussion about school. b, Ask students which topics they often talk about their school life? + favorite subjects, score, their friends. etc... - Introduces the situation of the passages 1,2,3. - Students guess the meaning and work in pairs to say which topics they often talk about when they meet or talk to each other. 2. Before you read: Vocabulary pre-teach: - Provide the students new words/phrases, then explain the meaning of the word/phrase. - Students read all the word/phrases aloud. - Write down their notebooks + corner shop(NP): a shop at the corner of a street + pro'fession(n): = job, occupation . + stuck(adj): bị mắc kẹt + 'attitude(n): what you think about or behave toward something. + mall (n): an area containing a lot of shops . eg: a shopping mall 3. While you read: - Introduce briefly the content of the reading text. - Get feedback and give correct answers - Move round to check students’ work. - Listen and check. - Ask students to keep on working in pairs. - Move round to check the activity. - Get feedback and give correct answers. 4. After you read: - Tell students to work in groups: - Go round to help students with their work. - check and give remarks - Students read these talks, then work independently and fill each blank with one of the words in the box. - Compare the answer with a partner. Task 1: Gap-filling. .Fill each blank with one of the words in the box below. There are more words than needed Correct answer: 1.enjoy 2.traffic 3. worry 4. crowded 5. language -Students to work in pairs. Read the small talks again and find out who..... - 9-10 pairs are required to give answers in front of the class (1 pair/ 1 time/ 1 answer). Task 2: Finding who... Name -Enjoys teaching profession Miss Phuong -has to get up early Phong -lives far from school Phong’ family -loves working with children Miss Phuong -loves learning English Phong -rides a bike to school everyday Phong -studies at a high school Phong -teaches English at a high school Miss Phuong -worries about someone else’s travelling Mr Ha, Phong’s father -Read the talks more carefully and answer the questions. - Some pairs to report in front of the class. Task 3: Answering questions. 1: He studies at Chu Van An high school 2: He studies many subjects such as Math, Physics, Chemistry..... 3: Because it is an international language. 4: She says that teaching is hard work, but she enjoys it because she loves working with children. 5: Because his son has to ride his bike in narrow and crowded streets on the way to school Students work in group. Choose one of the following topics and talk about it for about 5 minutes. - Some students talk about their topic in front of the class. Examples: a.What subjects you like learning best and why. - I like English best because it is an important means of international communication - I like learning Math, Chemistry or Vietnamese Literature because it’s useful, interesting b. What you like and dislike doing at school . – doing a lot of homework - taking part in social activities - talking with my parents c. What you worry about at school . - I worry that many students cheat in exams/ live far from school/ difficulty in speaking English 5. Homework: - worksheet Asks students to prepare for the next lesson Speaking UNIT 2: SCHOOL TALKS Period 11 E: Language focus I. Pronunciation: /ʌ/ and /ɑ:/ /ʌ/ is a short sound /ɑ:/ is a long sound Example: love father /^/ /a:/ - Teacher explain and tell students how to pronounce - Teacher helps students to distinguish two sounds - Teacher do model and ask students to listen and repeat -Calls on some Students to pronounce two sounds -Students listen and repeat, practice the words Listen and repeat: study – subject – cousin – love – wonderful far – farther – marvelous – target – guitar -Open their textbooks and practice the sentences Activity: Practice these sentences: I love my school very much I think my cousin is lovely Last month I took Sunny out for lunch They are dancing under the stars Martha and Charles are dancing in the dark Let’s have lunch in the garden 20’ II. GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY 1. Vocabulary: - Teacher elicit, give the words, meaning. 2. Grammar Revise of how to make WH-question WH-question: Question words: Who (person), What (thing), Where (place), When (time), Why (reason), How (method, degree) Form: WH + V + O? Ex: Who writes “Sherlock Holmes”? WH + auxilary Verb + S + V + O? Practice Exercise 1: Make questions for the following responses when did you come? how long did you stay? who did you come with? where do you live? why do you like learning English? what time is it now? how many children do they have? Exercise 2: Fill each blank with an –ing or to+infinitive form of the verb in brackets Answer: 1. to hear 2. going 3. remembering 4. doing 5. worrying 6. to pay 7. to go 8. visiting 10. hearing Exercise 3 : Complete the following sentences using an –ing or –to infinitive form of the verbs in the box Answer: 1. to go 2. waiting 3. having 4. to find 5. living 6. making 7. to call 8. to lend 9. talking 10. to post - Ask students to look at Ex 1 in page 29, then make questions for the answers. - Ask them to work individually , then work in pairs to ask and answer. - Let them work in 4 minutes and then ask some pairs to report. - Check and give remarks. - Check and add any information if necessary. - Ask students to read the letter in Ex 2 and then give the correct form of the verbs in brackets. - Ask them to work alone in 5 minutes and then check it with their partners. - Ask two students to write the answers on the board. - Check and give remarks. - Ask students to do Ex 3 in 3 minutes . - Ask 2 students to do this exercise on the board. - Tell students to work individually , then share their answers with their parters. - Ask one st to give remarks on their friends ' task. - Check and give remarks. 2’ 5. Homework: Learn by heart the grammar points and prepare for the next lesson
