Period 7 A: Reading
I. Objective:
* Aims:By the end of the lesson, student will be able to understand small talks of students, teachers, parents about themselves, their daily lives or teaching and learning in school.
II. Language focus
1. Grammar: using gerund and to – infinitive appropriately
2. Vocabulary: words related to school
3. Skill: Skim the text for specific information

1. Warm-up:
a, Ask students to guess the meaning of “school talks”:
+ means the dialogues at school, conversation, discussion about school.
b, Ask students which topics they often talk about their school life?
+ favorite subjects, score, their friends. etc...
- Introduces the situation of the passages 1,2,3.
- Students guess the meaning and work in pairs to say which topics they often talk about when they meet or talk to each other.
2. Before you read:
Vocabulary pre-teach:
- Provide the students new words/phrases, then explain the meaning of the word/phrase.
- Students read all the word/phrases aloud.
- Write down their notebooks
+ corner shop(NP): a shop at the corner of a street
+ pro'fession(n): = job, occupation .
+ stuck(adj): bị mắc kẹt
+ 'attitude(n): what you think about or behave toward something.
+ mall (n): an area containing a lot of shops .
eg: a shopping mall
3. While you read:
- Introduce briefly the content of the reading text.
- Get feedback and give correct answers
- Move round to check students’ work.
- Listen and check.
- Ask students to keep on working in pairs.
- Move round to check the activity.
- Get feedback and give correct answers.
4. After you read:
- Tell students to work in groups:
- Go round to help students with their work.
- check and give remarks
- Students read these talks, then work independently and fill each blank with one of the words in the box.
- Compare the answer with a partner.
Task 1: Gap-filling.

Task 3: Answering questions.

Students work in group. Choose one of the following topics and talk about it for about 5 minutes.
- Some students talk about their topic in front of the class.
Examples:
a.What subjects you like learning best and why.
- I like English best because it is an important means of international communication
- I like learning Math, Chemistry or Vietnamese Literature because it’s useful, interesting
b. What you like and dislike doing at school .

c. What you worry about at school .
- I worry that many students cheat in exams/ live far from school/ difficulty in speaking English

/ʌ/ is a short sound
/ɑ:/ is a long sound

WH-question:
Question words: Who (person), What (thing), Where (place), When (time), Why (reason), How (method, degree)

Gerund and To + Infinitive
* Gerund:
- Form: V_ing
- Function: can be used as both Noun and Verb
* Cases in which we use gerund:
+ Preposition + V_ing
+ It be no good, it be no use, it be worth + V-ing
+ V + V-ing:
Appreciate, imagine, miss, risk, detest, hate, save, postpone, dislike, avoid, dread, enjoy, involve, suggest, practice, resent, keep, fancy, escape, excuse, confess, delay, consider, report, tolerate, quit, justify, mention, recall, finish, recollect, deny, admit, mind

* Infinitive:

- Ask them to work individually , then work in pairs to ask and answer.

- Ask students to read the letter in Ex 2 and then give the correct form of the verbs in brackets.
- Ask them to work alone in 5 minutes and then check it with their partners.
- Ask two students to write the answers on the board.
- Check and give remarks.
- Ask students to do Ex 3 in 3 minutes .
- Ask 2 students to do this exercise on the board.
- Tell students to work individually , then share their answers with their parters.
- Ask one st to give remarks on their friends ' task.
